How Go Little Loop is Reinventing the Secondhand Market

Cynthia Abad Mancheno, co-founder of Go Little Loop, shares why she and her partners started such an amazing and unique initiative in Spain. They are revolutionising the second hand market here. It was a pleasure to speak to her and learn all about her business which I think is going to do big things!

Hello! I´m Cynthia Abad Mancheno, co-founder of Go Little Loop. Before I tell you about what we do at Go Little Loop, I want to explain why. Let me take you back about ten years. I had just left the doctor’s office. I was halfway through my first pregnancy and found out I would be having a little girl. The moment felt right to finally go to a baby store and start my shopping for baby gear. 

I walked into one of the mega stores, loaded with aisles and aisles of baby stuff. I went to an aisle which was bursting with strollers of every shape and size. After a few moments, I realised I didn’t know where to start and really needed guidance.

After that first memorable and overwhelming store visit, I started compiling a list of “must-haves” from my mommy friends. I also started doing research online, and realising my list was really going to cost me.

Once the baby came, I was surprised to see how incredibly quickly she grew- I blinked and she was 12-months-old. I found myself with a house full of stuff that she didn’t need anymore. Now came the realisation that I had spent so much money on these beautiful things for my baby, and she had barely even used them. I felt guilty, and spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to dispose of the items- give them to loved ones? Donate them? Try my luck in the secondhand marketplace?

I did a little of all three. And this is how I came to discover the nightmare that is the secondhand marketplace. Items are sitting in storage, covered in cobwebs, dust, missing pieces, discoloured, or worse. On a rare occasion you might find a gem, but that’s only when you’re really lucky. And don’t get me started on the endless text messaging with prospective buyers and sellers, the bartering, the driving around trying to find a place to park.

To summarise the problem, shopping for baby gear in traditional stores is expensive, and confusing. Secondhand shopping is time-consuming and inconvenient. And getting rid of the items is nearly as difficult as acquiring them.
